So here we have a guy who can hop into the body of somebody in the past in order to put right a wrong. Sound familiar? Well it should because Source Code is pretty much Quantum Leap: The Movie. Still, while the theme isn’t exactly original, Duncan Jones has trodden over the concept well enough to prove beyond shadow of a doubt that 2009’s sci-fi thriller Moon was no fluke.
Captain Colter Stevens (Gyllenhaal) is a soldier who wakes up to find he’s part of a covert government initiative whereby he’s assumed somebody else’s identity in a parallel reality in an effort to thwart a terrorist’s future plans. Confused? Well you won’t be because the script allows the mission to be explained thoroughly enough not to get bogged down and strangle the actual plot. Cue a pair of superb performances from Jake Gyllenhaal and Michelle Monaghan and you’ve got yourself a neat, pacy thriller – even managing to serve up a neat little nod to Sam Beckett’s exploits in the process.
Blu-ray-wise, the image is pin sharp and the transfer handles the explosions and fast editing with ease. The dark tones do bleed a little now and again, but it’s a minor grumble for an otherwise tip top image. Similarly, the sound manages to cover all bases – rendering the hushed whispers and room-shaking explosions with equal clarity. It comes together as a pretty great title to own on Blu-ray.
Overall Verdict: If you’ve been waiting ages for a Quantum Leap film, this should do the trick – especially as it looks and sounds great to boot.
