In a sleepy lagoon off the coast of Japan, fishermen with commercial interests in mind drive dolphins into a cove where international dolphin trainers are gathered to do business. They will pay a huge bounty of anything up to $150,000 for the one’s that they want – whilst those considered not good enough are slaughtered to be sold as whale meat.
In the 1960s Richard O’Barry worked as a dolphin trainer for the TV Show Flipper. Now his mission is to keep dolphins from being captured and exploited, in a bid for personal redemption.
O’Barry is a well spoken, intelligent man, who has gathered together a team of film-makers, divers and electronics experts to infiltrate the Japanese fishing port of Taiji to find out what is going on and how it can be stopped (those involved in the business really don’t want anyone to see what they get up to).
The film is well shot, and the story is well told, but it is upsetting to watch at times. Seeing dolphins treated so inhumanly is devastating. I’m sure that viewers of this film will hope that bringing these atrocities to light in this documentary will help to put an end to this barbaric practice.
Overall Verdict: The Cove is a gripping documentary that has been rightfully Oscar nominated.
