Yes, believe it or not, but Demi Moore still actually does acting. Despite an incredible dip from being the biggest female star on the planet to only being briefly mentioned every so often as Ashton Kutcher’s paramour, she does still occasionally make an appearance on screen. Set in the 1960s, Michael Caine plays a janitor at the London Diamond Exchange, who’s soon to retire and has a scheme to steal some of the expensive gems that go through the business. To do it he enlists the help of an American executive called Laura (Moore), who is frustrated that the old boy’s club attitude that pervades the 60s means that she never gets promoted, even though she’s blatantly more qualified than many of the men rising through the ranks. However the janitor’s plans may go further than he first lets on.

There’s always a danger with calling a film something like Flawless, as before they’ve even seen it critics are likely to be thinking of clever ways to be able to point out how it isn’t flawless at all. However filmmakers still insist on giving their films names like these. It’s almost as if they’re not making films for the critics! That said, while the movie isn’t flawless, it is pretty entertaining. Demi Moore has a tendency to either be incredibly watchable or seem hopelessly amateurish. Here, despite rubbing up against the reliable class of Michael Caine, she’s very good. The plot twists are a bit silly, and the opening does make you wonder whether the entire movie’s going to a subtle as a brick, but overall it works. Director Michael Radford has a nice eye for the 60s and the kind of screwball capers that emerged during that era.

The special features on the disc are a bit weak. There’s a passable director’s commentary and a couple of text features where you can read about the history of diamonds and some real life heists. None of it’s particularly impressive, but it does provide a bit of a diversion beyond the movie. However it’s the film that’s definitely the main event here, and while it’s not perfect it’s a pretty enjoyable heist flick that just about succeeds.

Overall Verdict: It may not be flawless, but it’s still a minor gem.
