Despite the bloody awful, cheesy title, the 1988 trash thriller, Amsterdamned, is actually a lot of fun. Set in the Dutch capital, something evil in lurking in the canals. It’s coming out of the water, grabbing people and brutally murdering them, before sinking back beneath the surface. Policeman Eric Visser is put on the case, soon realising a particularly vicious serial killer is at work, but who is it, and can Visser stop him?
Although the film can’t decide whether it wants people to take it seriously or not, or indeed if it wants to be a sort of serial killer monster movie (it very consciously takes a lot of its influenced from Jaws) or an OTT episode of Midsomer Murders, it’s oddly entertaining. Although not particularly gory, the murders are well executed, there are a couple of great action sequences that take us through the streets and canals of Amsterdam, and fans of trash cinema should be more than happy.
The DVD also offers a ‘making of’ documentary, which is a pretty impressive thing to have for such a little known 80s movie, as well as the option of watching the movie either in the original Dutch (with subtitles) or as an English dubbed version. Although the film is certainly not a classic, even of trash cinema, it’s still quite fun and worth a watch for those who like these sort of cheesy movies.
Overall Verdict: Silly and uncertain what it wants to be, but Amsterdamned is nevertheless as entertaining oddly fun slice of trashy 80s cinema.
