When launched back in 2002, David Lynch’s website promised all sorts of exclusive goodies for subscribers, which would showcase all manner of works and experiments from the wizard of weirdness. Collected on this DVD is a selection of those former exclusives, which include six short films and three ‘intervalometer’ (time lapse) experiments.
Cue a Japanese woman talking about bananas, a blonde girl crying, a bug crawling over a shack, a picture of some steps, Lynch on a boat, Lynch making a lamp, Lynch as a hillbilly, and so on. Infuriating and irritating yet haunting and mesmerising, Dynamic: 01 pretty much offers what we’ve come to expect from such an increasingly cryptic and avant garde talent, though the strange concoction of art experiments on this disc are aimed directly at the hardcore fans and modern art enthusiasts who love to wax lyrical on the Lynch forums, rather than those who favour his pre-Inland Empire work.
The most interesting segment on the disc isn’t a film or an experiment, but a straightforward (almost) Q&A with Lynch, whose distinct voice, curious hand movements and impressive quiff are far more entertaining than anything else on the disc.
The disc extras include optional introductions to each segment by the director himself, and while most of what the guy says makes sod all sense (at least initially), just listening to Lynch is a hoot.
Overall Verdict: More abstract experiments from the mind of David Lynch, which are aimed at hardcore enthusiasts only.
