The Ugly Truth Sneaks To UK Box Office Win

Rom com beats G.I. Joe thanks to previews

Although it's done it in a slightly sneaky fashion, The Ugly Truth has pipped its way to the top of the UK box office charts. It only did it because of its two days of previews. If you take out the £727,000 it made last Wednesday and Friday, its actual weekend take was lower than both G.I. Joe and Harry Potter 6.

However it was slightly hollow victory on a very slow weekend at cinemas (probably due to the first sun after weeks of rain keeping people out of the cinemas), as The Ugly Truth was the first film since April to top the charts with less than £2 million.

The rom com's win was even worse news for G.I. Joe, which would have expected to leap to the top of the box office even if The Ugly Truth did have a day and a half head start (Joe previews started Thursday afternoon). It's by far the lowest opening take for any blockbuser this summer, with Wolverine, Terminator Salvation, Transformers 2, Angels & Demons, Ice Age 3 and Harry Potter 6 each taking at least £5 million over their first weekend. It seems that although the film did better than expected in the US, it's going to end up a flop in the UK, probably because with G.I. Joe being known as Action Man over here, there isn't the mass awareness over here that the character has in the US.

The only other opener in the top ten chart was Orphan, which took £570 thousand. It's an okay but unimpressive start for the movie and suggest it's unlikely to find much of an audience. Land Of The Lost meanwhile continued to tank, flopping straight out of the top ten in only its second weekend in cinemas.

Take a look below for the ful UK top 10 for the weekend of August 7th-9th.
