In less than 12 days, Harry Potter And The Half Blood Prince has already become the highest grossing film in the UK so far this year. It stayed atop the box office chart, adding another £5.1 million over the weekend to take it to an impressive £33 million. In fact even if you don't take the weekend gross into account, Harry Potter had already overtaken the previous highest grosser, Transformers 2, before last Friday, thanks to impressibe midweek grosses now that children are on their summer holidays.
HP6 now has the sort of lead it'll be difficult for any other film to match this year, and indeed its on track to join the other Harry Potter films in the list of the 20 highest grossing films ever at the UK box office.
The Half Blood Prince beat the week's big opener, The Proposal, into second place. The movie took £3.25m, including just over a million from Wednesday and Thursday previews, to give Sandra Bullock her biggest UK opening ever. On an ordinary week it would have handily taken the number one spot, but Harry Potter is no ordinary franchise.
The rest of the Top 10 largely saw everything dropping down one place. It also doesn't appear that Universal's decision to release a 15 certificate version of Bruno on Friday made a huge amount of difference to the film's fortunes, as its gross dropped by nearly half - although it's not known how much came from the 15 version and how much the 18 rated original.
The only other new entry was Antichrist, at number 10, marking Lars Von Trier's biggest UK opening ever, and a decent start for such a controversial movie.
