No, Whip It! isn't some sort of bizarre bondage film, it's the first film directed by Drew Barrymore, who's been producing for years (Charlie's Angels, Donnie Darko), but has now decided to step behind the camera. She's starring in the movie opposite Ellen Page and Juliette Lewis as part of a female roller derby team. The movie sees Page's misfit teen character finally finding acceptance when she puts on her wheels and starts to race.
Whip It! is due out in October, and now the first images from the film, featuring Page, Barrymore and others in less than fetching green outfits, have been released. We've got one of them on the right, but if you want to see the rest, you'll have to head on over to USA Today, which first revealed the pics.
The plot does sound a bit blah, but Barrymore more has a nice, quirky sensibility that could turn Whip It! into something more than generic pap, and it has to be said that both Page and Lewis could ensure this is one that's worth a watch.
