Three new films opened wide at the US box office this weekend, and the winner turned out to be Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps, which took $19.2 million. Oliver Stone's follow-up to his 80s classic was bouyed by good reviews, and opened towards the top of analysts' expectations.
Less successful was Legends Of The Guardians, Zach Snyder's owly CGI animated movie, which only took $16.3 million. Many had wondered whether the flick, made by the same team as animated Happy Feet, would be a breakout hit, but despite some beautiful trailers, it seems that with kids at school and some middling reviews, it couldn't pull in a big audience (Happy Feet, in comparison, took over $40 million in its first weekend). Indeed, on Friday the movie was in third place on the chart, behind The Town, but managed to pull itself back into second position by Sunday.
The only other new entry was the rom com You Again, opened weakly in fifth with $8.3 million. The movie, starring Kristen Bell, Jamie Lee Curtis and Sigourney Weaver, battled against scathing reviews to take even what it did.
It's also worth noting that over the weekend, Reisdent Evil: Afterlife overtook the gross of the third film in the franchise, Apocalypse, to become the most successful of the Resident Evil movies at the US box office. Take a look below for the top 10 for the weekend of September 24th-26th.
