A Contract With God To Get Adaptation

The 'first' graphic novel heads for the screen

Often described as the first graphic novel (technically it wasn't, but it was one that helped spur interest in the idea), Will Eisner's A Contract With God, first published in 1978, is seen as a bit of a seminal work. Unsurprisingly then, as the film world is keen to turn every graphic novel under the sun into a film, they've now set their sights on this one.

A Contract With God is a slightly tougher proposition for an adaptation than most tough, as it consists of a series of smaller tales, all based around Eisner's memories of growing up in a New York tenement, rather than just one big, action packed one. THR reports that writer-producer Darren Dean is the man behind the project, with plans to get four directors to take on four different stories from the book.

Alex Rivera (Sleep Dealer), Tze Chun (Children of Invention), Barry Jenkins (Medicine for Melancholy), and Sean Baker (Prince of Broadway) are the people who've been hired to handle each segment, although there's no news on when exactly the movie might be shot.
