Scorsese Starts Shooting Hugo Cabret

With Jude Law, Ray Winstone and more joining the cast

He may never have made a family film before, but Martin Scorsese's career has always been marked by him trying out new arenas, and now it's been announced that production is underway in London on his adaptation of the children's book, The Invention Of Hugo Cabret.

The film, based on Brian Selznick's book, is about an orphan who lives inside the walls of a Parisian train station in the 1930s, and must finish a quest his father started by solving the mystery of a broken robot.

For several months, Asa Butterfield (The Boy In The Striped Pyjamas) has been set for the lead role, with Chloe Moretz as the female lead of shopkeeper's daughter Isabelle. There have also been rumours Scorsese was after Sasha Baron Cohen and Ben Kingsley for the film. They's now been confirmed for the movie, as have quite a few more names, including Jude Law, Ray Winstone, Christopher Lee, Helen McCrory, Frances De La Tour and Richard Griffiths. Of those, the only one for whom we have character info is Baron Cohen, who be playing an inspector who patrols the station.

The 3D movie is due in cinemas next year.
