Karate Kid Trounces A-Team At The US Box Office

The battle of the 80s remakes has unexpected results

A couple of months ago, if you'd asked most box office watchers whether they expected The A-Team or The Karate Kid to take more money in it first weekend at the US box office, most would have said A-Team, and to do it by a wide margin. However now the results are in and it's the Jaden Smith and Jackie Chan movie that's roundly trounced the remake of the 80s TV show, despite the A-Team having huge amounts of hype and a mega-marketing budget.

The Karate Kid, which was bouyed by positive reviews and a general lack of live action male-skewing child friendly films in cinemas at the moment, took a very impressive $56 million in its first three days. The A-Team meanwhile got generally bad reviews and is up against a lot of PG-13 action fare, and opened to a rather soft $26 million and second place on the chart.

It's even more impressive considering Karate Kid only cost around $40 million to make, while A-Team had a budget of over $110 million.

They were the only two new openers in the US Top 10, however Shrek Forever After, which dropped to number three, passed the $200 million mark, while Iron Man 2, at number 9, ended up only a few hundred thousand short of the $300 million mark.

Take a look below for the full US box office top 10 for the weekend of June 11th-13th, 2010.
