Despite the fact he looks like one of the aliens that comes out of the mothership at the end of Close Encounters (but wearing a badly fitting wig), Dario Argento has had a long career directing Italian horror, with films like Suspiria and Tenebre ensuring him a lasting legacy amongst horror fans. However in recent years, films like Mother of Tears and Giallo have been less well received.
However it seems Argento is planning a bit of a comeback by taking a classic horror story and turning it 3D. Shock Till You Drop reports that their very own Alan Jones has twittered that "Just announced, Dario Argento's DRACULA in 3D, filming in Italy January, period setting."
They add that Argento will both write and direct and that the official synopsis for the film (being handed out at the Cannes Film Market) promises "a faithful translation of the Bram Stoker novel."
However Dario had better get a move on, as there are numerous other Dracula movies in the works, although none of the others are a straight-up retelling of Bram Stoker's book. He's nevertheless got competition from The Last Voyage of the Demeter (about Dracula's journey from Transylvania to England), Dracula: Year Zero (a blood soaked prequel looking at how Vlad the impaler became Dracula), and Vlad (a look at the historical Vlad the Impaler). It's unlikely all of these will be made, but Dario's going to have to do something a bit more than making it in 3D, to make his Dracula stand out.
