3D Films Account For A Third Of US Box Office

Four 3D flicks siphon up 33 percent of the cash

It's no wonder the studios are getting overly excited about 3D, as according to a report by The International 3D Society (via Movieweb), so far this year, the four three-dimensional flicks that have been in cinemas - Avatar, Clash Of The Titans, Alice In Wonderland and How To Train Your Dragon - have accounted for 33% of the entire US box office.

The study also found that out of the 14 weekends in 2010 so far, a 3D flick has topped the box office for 10 of them, and that the premium prices for 3D movies are significantly expanding the amount of money a film can gross. 80% of Avatar's gargantuan take was made on 3D screens, while they accounted for 65% of both Alice In Wonderland and How To Train Your Dragon's first weekend in cinema.

I3DS President Jim Chabin remarked, "This is truly remarkable performance in that out of 127 general market films released, just four 3D movies captured 33% of the total dollars so far this year."

Evidence like this shows that like it or not, there are going to be a lot more 3D flicks coming, as if four flicks can hoover up a third of the US box office so far this year, the dollar signs are going to be lighting up in studio executives' eyes.
