I'm thinking of writing a generic post that just says '????? is being rumoured for the role Eliza Dolittle in the upcoming remake of the classic musical, as in the last year or so, pretty much every young actress in the world seems to have been linked to the party at some point. However the latest name to be bandied about comes from a sounder source than most, as it's been dropped by the film's screenwriter, Emma Thompson.
She told BBC 5 Live at the premiere of Nanny McPhee and the Big Bang yesterday, that Carey Mulligan is now the woman in the frame for Eliza. She would seem a good choice - assuming she can sing - and certainly better than the long-rumoured Keira Knightley.
The last we heard John Madden was going to direct this new version of Lerner and Loewe's classic musical, about humble flower girl Eliza Dolittle, who's taken under the wing of the crotchety Professor Higgins, after he makes a bet he can pass off anybody as a society lady.
As yet the role of Henry Higgins hasn't been filled, although Hugh Grant is being linked to the role, with Thompson saying that she would "love him to do it".
