For the first time since The Dark Knight managed it in July 2008, the same film has stayed at the top of the box office for four weekends. In case you've been living under a rock, that film is Avatar, and as we should have expected by now, it's also set another new record.
The film had the biggest fourth weekend at the US box office ever, adding another $48 million to take its American gross to $429 million. That smashed the record that's stood since 1997, when Cameron's Titanic made £28 million it its fourth weekend. In fact, until last weekend, the old third weekend record was less than what Avatar made in its fourth weekend, showing just how huge the movie is.
Worldwide the movie's gross now stands at $1.34 billion, putting it comfortably in second place on the all-time ever list, although still $500 million behind Titanic - but it's definitely now possible that it could eventually overtake the big boat movie. After this success, don't be surprised if news comes soon that James Cameron has exploded because his ego can no longer fit inside his body.
Once again, the top three films at the US box office remained the same, with the top new entry, Daybreakers, coming in at number four, with a decent $15 million. The other two fresh films in the top 10 were the romantic comedy Leap Year, starring Amy Adams and Matthew Goode, which hit number 6 with $9.1 million, and the Michael Cera dark comedy, Youth In Revolt, which came in at number 9 with $7 million. The last result in particular is likely to be seen as a disappointment, as there'd been quite a lot of buzz around Youth In Revolt.
