In a bit of a repeat of last weekend, the top three films have stayed the same at the top of the US box office. It's something that rarely happens, but with new releases like Old Dogs and Ninja Assassins underperforming, it's allowed last week's films to score big again over the Thanksgiving weekend.
New Moon dropped a whopping 70% from last weekend, but still came out on top taking $42.2 million from Friday-Sunday (with $65 million over the full five-day Thanksgiving weekend, which started on Thursday), to take its overall gross to $230 million. It's an impressive total for only 10 days, but the drop suggests it may struggle to make it to $300 million.
More impressive was the Sandra Bullock drama The Blind Side, which made 17% more from Friday-Sunday than it did in its first weekend, to take its gross over $100 million. It's a rare thing for a film to gross more in its second weekend than it first, unless its expanding into more cinemas, suggesting the film has had excellent word of mouth.
The top new entry was Old Dogs, starring John Tavolta and Robin Williams, which came in at number 4 with an okay but not particularly impressive $16.8 million. The Wachowski Brothers producer Ninja Assassin did less well on its first weekend with only $13.1 on its first weekend, to place sixth on the list. Also making its first entry in the top 10 was Fantastic Mr Fox, which expanded from four to over 2,000 screens, to take $7 million for ninth place.
