It's The End Of The World At the Box Office

People obviously like the end of the world, as Roland Emmerich's disaster epic, 2012, has zoomed to the top of the US box office, with a massive $65 million in its first three days. However while it did well in the US, Fox released the film all around the world on Friday, with the movie taking a stupendous $225 million around the globe on its first weekend in cinemas. It is, apparently, the biggest worldwide opening ever for a film not based on an established franchise or brand.

2012 was the only movie opening widely in the US this weekend, which probably helped its take. However Pirate Radio (which was called The Boat That Rocked over here in the UK) got a medium sized release, but fell outside the top 10, landing at number 11, with $2.6 million from 882 screens.

Fantastic Mr Fox also opened on only four screens (it'll be exanding massively over the next few weeks), taking $260,000, to give it the highest per screen average of the weekend ($60,000 per theatre), but only landing it at number 22 on the box office list.

After last weekend's record breaking per screen average for Precious, the film expanded to 174 screen, where it took $6.0 million over the weekend to place fourth on the chart. It's another impressive tally and suggests the film could have legs as it expands to more screens over the next few weeks.

Meanwhile Paranormal Activity, the faux-home video flick that only cost $15,000 to film, crossed the $100 million mark, making it one of the most profitable films in history. Its total currently stands at $103.8 million.
