In the US, Fame hasn't done very well, only hitting number three on the box office chart on it's opening weekend and dropping to seven last weekend, however the movie has been a much bigger hit in the UK. It's now held off the competition to take the top spot at the box office for the second week running. The movie added another £1.7 million to its take, for a number 1 finish, just beating Ricky Gervais' new movie, The Invention Of Lying, into second place.
While Gervais was probably hoping for the top spot, he won't be too upset, as it's a decent opening and more than his previous movie, Ghost Town, took in its first weekend.
The next new entry on the list sees Disney's 3D re-issue of Toy Story taking the third spot with £1.35 million. It's a pretty good gross for the movie, especially seeing as it's showing on fewer screens than any other movie in the top 10. Also hitting the chart was Pandorum, which had to settle for seventh place, with a slim take of only £346 thousand. However it didn't flop as badly as Driving Aphrodite (known as My Life In Ruins in the US) from My Big Fat Greek Wedding star Nia Vardalos, which made a pathetic £21,000, falling way outside the top 10.
Interestingly, The Guardian points out that with its take now up to £2.51 million, Coco Before Chanel is now the second highest grossing French film ever at UK cinemas, just overtaking Gerard Depardieu's Cyrano De Bargerac, although still well behind the £5 million gross of Amelie.
