The UK weekend box office result are in and despite numerous new films getting released in cinemas, it's Fame that's taken the number one spot, scoring £2.4 million in its first three days in cinemas. It's a pretty good result for a movie from a first time filmmaker with no familiar names in the cast. It's also true that the film underperformed at the US box office, only making it to number three, but it seems us Brits are more receptive to the lives of the performing arts kids.
The rest of the week's new movies did far less well, with the Bruce Willis sci-fi flick Surrogates making less than a million on its opening weekend, which suggests its unlikely to find much sustained success at the box office. It also seems that Paramount's decision to delay the release of The Soloist hasn't paid off. Many films use the head of steam they've built up during their US release to help promote a movie in the rest of the world, but as The Soloist hit America in April (having been delayed from last November), it was coming into the UK pretty cold, and despite some decent reviews, the difficult to market drama only made it to number five on the chart with a rather measly £373,151.
The final new entry was the Darwin biopic Creation, which didn't have much to cheer about with a take of only £199,477, despite a decent martketing push, passable reviews and interest in Charles Darwin at a high because of the 200th anniversary of his birth. It was an average of only £845 per screen, which is a pretty horrific number for any film, especially such a high profile one as this.
