Despite three new films opening widely across the US this weekend, the winner at the box office was the same movie as last week, Cloudy With A Chance Of Meatballs. The film picked up another $24 million, dropping less than 20% from last weekend, suggesting strong word of mouth and also that 3D movies are still a big plus for audiences.
It meant that the Bruce Willis sci-fi thriller Surrogates had to make do with second place, taking $15 million in its first weekend, with fellow debutante Fame coming in third with $10 million. Those figures will undoubtedly be seen as a disappointment for both films, although it's not drastically bad news for Fame, which only cost $18 million to make.
The only other new movie in the top 10 was the sci-fi horror Pandorum, which came is at six with $4.4 million. it's again far lower than the studio was hoping, and won't be helped by middling reviews.
Oddly, probably the biggest winner this weekend didn't even make it into the top 25. Michael Moore's new movie, Capitalism: A Love Story, about the current financial crisis, opened on only four screens, but made $240,000. With a massive average of $60,000 per screen, it undoubtedly suggests the movie should make a fair amount of money as it opens on more screens in the coming weeks.
