With the US enjoying the four day Memorial Day weekend, the complete box office lists were out a little later than usual, so we thought we'd wait until we also had the UK weekend chart and update you on what's been going on on both sides of the Atlantic.
In the US the last official weekend of the summer was a fairly weak affair, with no new releases managing to shift The Final Destination and Inglorious Basterds off the top of the charts. Although The Final Destination's $12.3 million was enough for a second weekend at the top, it's a big drop from the previous week. Even so its box office take is being kept higher than it might have been due to premium price 3D theatres, which have accounted for the vast majority of the film's gross.
The top new US entry on the weekend list was the Sandra Bullock comedy All About Steve, which took a passable but not particularly impressive $11.2 million for a third place finish. At number four was another debut movie, Gamer, which took a disappointing $9.1 million. Not long ago the Gerard Bitler action film was rumoured to be shaping up as a possible late-summer hit, but bad mouth of worth and some dodgy trailers seem to have killed it. The final new entry was Mike Judge's comedy Extract, which took a less than stellar $4.3 million for a ninth place finish.
Over this side of the pond, District 9 stormed to the top of the charts with £2.28 million. Although a decent opening, it's perhaps not as impressive as many had expected, perhaps because the film didn't enjoy the saturation marketing and hype over here that it got in the US. The indie comedy (500) Days Of Summer did pretty well on its first weekend, taking $1.2 million for a third place finish. Although it may not seem much for a rom-com, it's pretty impressive for a quirky film without any major stars. The rest of the top 10 was made up of holdovers, with the most notable being Harry Potter 6, which became the first Potter film since Chamber Of Secrets to make it past £50 million at the UK box office. It joins an elite list of only 13 films ever to make it to that magic number.
