Quentin Tarantino will be celebrating after Inglorious Basterds scored him his best opening weekend ever at the box office. Inglourious Basterds took $37.6 million in its first three days, which is particularly impressive for a violent R-rated movie. In fact it's the second weekend in a row that a film has had one of the 20 biggest US opening weekends ever for an R-rated movie, following District 9's similar sized bow last weekend.
Basterds' take is also noteworthy because despite Tarantino's reputation, he doesn't actually have that great a record for big box office numbers. Inglourious Basterds marks his biggest opening weekend ever, opertaking Kill Bill Volume 2, which made $25.1 million in its first three days. Inglourious Basterds opening was also bolstered by a further $22.7 million in 22 countries outside the US.
The only other new movies in the top 10 bothmade inauspicious debuts. Robert Rodriguez's kid's flick, Shorts, took $6.6m for a sixth place finish, while the Alexis Bledel (Gilmore Girls, SIn City) comedy, Postgrad, made $2.8m to finish at number 10 on the chart.
