The UK box office results are in and The Time Traveler's Wife has topped the charts in its first weekend. However the movie's £1.41 million was actually the lowest gross to top the UK weekend cinema list since last October.
In fact it was a fairly weak result all around, with numerous new entries throughout the chart grossing less than impressive numbers.The overall box office results are believed to have been affected by Saturday and Sunday previews of Tarantino's Inglorious Basterds, which aren't counted in this weekend's tally (they'll be added to the films gross next weekend).
Despite opening on a Wednesday during the summer holidays, the family flick Aliens In The Attic only grossed £1.3 million for a second place finish. Bandslam, which also opened on Wednesday, made a less than stunning £628,957, amid a growing feeling in the industry that while critics and audiences have liked the film, the marketing has been a complete and utter botch job, trying to sell the film to completely the wrong audience. The final new entry was the Steve Zahn, Milla Jovovich thriller A Perfect Getaway, which made $418,703 for a tenth place finish.
The real loser was Imagine That, which completely tanked. The Eddie Murphy comedy only made £110,000, which made for an abysmal 16th place opening.
There was also some good news for Harry Potter And The Half Blood Prince, as thanks to strong midweek sales and the million it added over the weekend, the film has now joined the ranks of the 20 highest grossing movies ever at the UK box office. It's currently at number 18, just ahead of its Harry Potter compatriot, The Prisoner Of Azkaban. The film is also now at number 17 in the list of the highest grossing movies ever worldwide, and has overtaken Tranformers 2 as the highest grossing movie of the year so far, with $861 million. It'll be interesting to see where it ends up by the time it ends its box office run.
