Looking back over Nicole Kidman’s career, I’ve come to the conclusion that her hair does as much acting as she does. That may seem a strange to thing to say, but I was thinking about it when I watched Lar Von Trier's experiemental drama Dogville, where her normally curly luscious ginger locks are cut shorter and died blonde, in a seemingly deliberate attempt to make her look less sexy and more innocent and vulnerable.

Of course many people’s hair changes from film to film in response to the character they’re playing, but Nicole’s has gone from long to pixie, been red, blonde and brown, it’s been up, down and just about everywhere in between, and each time it says as much about her character as anything that comes out of her mouth.

So in the course of her career, exactly what has her hair said about her?

BMX Bandits (1983)
Character: Judy
What Her Hair Says: I’m so Aussie and fresh-faced it looks like a bottle of perming solution has exploded on my head!

What Her Hair Says: Look how ginger, curly and sexy my hair is, please Hollywood notice me!

Days Of Thunder (1990)
Character: Claire Lewicki
What Her Hair Says: See how my bushy hair makes me look extra tall next to Tom; this will be my minor rebellion against him for the next 10 years.

Billy Bathgate (1991)

What Her Hair Says: I just wanted to prove the carpet matches the drapes.

To Die For (1995)
Character: Suzanne Stone Maretto
What Her Hair Says: I’ve straightened my hair because I’m now a proper arty actress in a Gus Van Sant film, and ain’t it sexy?

Batman Forever (1996)
Character: Dr. Chase Meridian
What Her Hair Says: Doesn’t my hair looking shiny and sleek next to black rubber.

The Portrait Of A Lady (1996)

What Her Hair Says: My gothic gingerness makes me look sooo magical and witchy.

Eyes Wide Shut (1999)
