First Look At The US Godzilla Reboot

Legendary Pictures unveils its monster

While most of the reports coming out of Comic-Con over the weekend were about the various panels, now the event has drawn to a close, news has emerged about some of the interesting things going on on the showfloor. One of these was that Legendary Pictures (The Dark Knight, Watchmen, 300), used an augemented reality device so they could reveal their new take on Godzilla, which will be in cinemas in 2012. Visitors to the booth stood in front of a webcam and saw a superimposed animation (designed by Talking Dog Studios) of Godzilla's "atomic breath" shooting out into the air in front of them from Godzilla's mouth, complete with black smoke rising from the flames and the ground-shaking bellow of Godzilla's instantly recognisable roar.

To coincide with this, they also released the first look at the rebooted creature for the rest of the world, with a concept art image of the giant lizard standing in the midst of a ruined city. Interestingly, if this is the look they go for, it suggests the new American Godzilla is going to adhere much closer to the original Japanese version. Admittedly in 1954 the creature looked the way it did partly because it was a man in a suit, but to be honest a more humanoid appearance would probably work a lot better than the lumbering dinosaur approach of Roland Emmerich's movie.

And with Tim Burton's many monsters destroying a city movie, Monsterpocalyse, also planned for 2012, it appears we could have a bit of a battle on our hands. Take a look at the first Godzilla concept art below.
