We probably shouldn’t assume this really will happen yet, as since her last directorial foray, 1996’s The Mirror Has Two Faces, has been attached to helm all manner of never made movies, but THR reports that the legendary star is set to direct a biopic of Russia’s Catherine The Great.
There’s no news on whether she also plans to star, but as she’s appeared in all her directorial outings, there’s a good chance.
However she won’t be playing the central role, as it’s said the movie focuses on a ‘young, sensual Catherine trapped in an abusive marriage with the heir to the Russian throne. But, when her inept husband proves incapable of ruling, she utilizes her intelligence, fortitude and passion to rise to power.’
It is often said that it was under her reign, which lasted from 1762 to 1796, that Russia grew to be considered for the first time as one of the truly great powers of Europe.
At the moment it’s not clear when we might see the film.
