1993’s Hocus Pocus is one of those movies that wasn’t considered a particularly big success at the time of its release, but thanks to videos and later DVDs, it’s become a bit of a favourite for several generations of kids.
We’re now at the point where those who enjoyed it first time round are getting some power in Hollywood, and it’s probably for that reason a sequel has been put into the works.
After several years of rumours it was reported in April that the follow-up was moving forward and wanted two lead female actresses, “in the same vein as Tina Fey and Melissa McCarthy.” Well, it seems Fey was listening as The Tracking Board reports that she has signed on to report.
At the moment it isn’t clear whether she will also star, but it seems a distinct possibility.
The original Hocus Pocus starred Bette Midler, Sarah Jessica Parker and Kathy Najimy as the Sanderson Sisters, three witches who are resurrected in Salem, Massachusetts on Halloween night. With the wicked (but funny) ladies on the loose, it’s up to a group of teenagers and an immortal cat to save their town.
The sequel is reportedly set years after the original, and focuses on a housewife who is related to the Sandersons. She teams up with a witch hunter to save her kids when they encounter a group of resurrected witches on Halloween.
There’s no news yet on who will write the script or direct, so don’t expect it in cinemas for a while next.
