My Big Fat Greek Wedding is still one of the most successful independent movies ever made, having grossed over $360 million back in 2002. However writer/star Nia Vardalos never really managed to capitalise on that film’s success.
It may be for that reason that a sequel is now in the works, according to THR.
Vardalos has written the script for the follow-up, which is about a new wedding that brings the family together again, along with the revelation of a family secret. She will also return to play Toula Portakalos, with John Corbett also coming back as her husband Ian.
Tom Hanks and Rita Wilson, who produced My Big Fat Greek Wedding, will serve have the same job for the follow-up through their Playtone Pictures company, alongside Gary Goetzman.
Nia Vardalos commented, “Now that I’m experiencing motherhood, I’m ready to write the next chapter of my family story. Of course a few jaded folks in the press corps will claim I ran out of money or just want to kiss John Corbett again. One of these things is true.”
Joel Zwick directed the first film, but the sequel doesn’t have a director attached at this time.
