Nicolas Winding Refn has been having plenty of success with dark thrillers such as Drive and Only God Forgives, but now he’s heading somewhere slightly different as Deadline reports that he’sin early talks to direct the supernatural thriller, The Bringing.
Sony Pictures snapped up Brandon Murphy and Murphy’s spec script back in February, which is loosely based on the mysterious death of Elisa Lam at the Cecil Hotel in Los Angeles. She was found dead in the water tanks on the roof of the hotel in February 2013, with the added twist that before she dieda video popped upshowing her exhibiting strange behaviour, seemingly interacting with an invisible entity.
To give things an ever more sinister note, the hotel was previously home to serial killer Richard Ramirez and has been the site of numerous suicides.
While the script isn’t strictly about Lam’s story, it does follow a man who is investigating a death at the Cecil Hotel.
Refn must have loved the screenplay as he apparently actively sought the director’s chair.
