Mighty Morphin Power Rangers might have been very popular and quite a lot of fun, but let’s face it, looked at objectively it was a bit naff.
However now it might be getting a bit of an upgrade from shiny lycra and people in monster and mecha suits running around obviously fake sets. Lionsgate has announced that they’re planning a new Mighty Morphin Power Rangers live action movie.
The Power Rangers started as a television series more than 20 years ago, and the series has been in continuous production ever since. It has subsequently grown into one of the worlds most popular and recognisable brands, with toys, apparel, costumes, video games, DVDs, comic books and other merchandise.
Creator Haim Saban commented, “Lionsgate is the perfect home for elevating our Power Rangers brand to the next level. They have the vision, marketing prowess and incredible track record in launching breakthrough hits from The Hunger Games to Twilight and Divergent. In partnership with the Lionsgate team, were confident that we will capture the world of the Power Rangers and translate it into a unique and memorable motion picture phenomenon with a legacy all its own.
There’s no news on exactly how they’ll tackle it on-screen, but the basics of young people in suits fighting bad guys and with the ability to join together to become a giant robot is bound to be the same.
