When you look at Kevin Spacey, nobody’s ever been particularly struck by how much he looks like Winston Churchill, but that doesn’t mean it’s a bad idea that he’s going to play the UK’s World War II leader in Captain of the Gate.
THR reports that the film chronicles Churchill’s ‘rise to power as he stood against parliament to defend Britain and the world from Adolf Hitler’s Third Reich’. That isn’t actually that much of a description, as Churchill was a very busy man in the run up to and during the war, and it’s not clear if this will be an overview, or if it will look at a very specific period between the wars.
Many forget that Winston wasn’t Prime Minister when the war started, but due to his actions before the conflict broke out, he was asked to take over, becoming one of the most admired leaders of the 20th Century in the process. He was PM between 1940 and 1945, and again from 1951 to 1955.
Ben Kaplan (WWII in HD, Reagan) wrote the screenplay, although it doesn’t appear a director is attached as yet.
