Even when the family sci-fi Explorers was released in 1985 a lot of critics suggested it was a film with a lot of potential, but which could have been better. It was a major flop at the cinema, but thanks to VHS became a firm favourite for many young people.
The guys over at Paramount Pictures must have fond memories and believe a new version could be a big success, as they are planning a remake, accordins to THR.
Gremlins director Joe Dante helmed the original, which followed three outcast teenage boys who bond over the creation of a homemade spaceship. Their creation ends up sending them into the far reaches of the galaxy, where they meet an adolescent alien who has been weaned on TV.
It was also a bit of a proving ground for those who would go on to later success, as it was an early role for both Ethan Hawke and River Phoenix, while Bobby Fite played the third of the best friends.
Not much is known about the direction the remake will take, although suggestions from an insider that it’s comparable to upcoming found footage time travel movie Welcome to Yesterday have people wondering if this will be a found footage flick too. There is a passable likelihood that’s what they thinking as it’s being handled by Paramount’s low-budget Insurge banner.
