Phil Lord and Chris Miller are continuing their run of starting off successful animated franchises, before heading off and leaving the sequels to someone else. After helming Cloudy With A Chance Of Meatballs, they left part two to Cody Cameron and Kris Pearn. Now, following the massive success of The Lego Movie, it’ll be Chris McKay taking over the directing reigns for the sequel, according to Deadline.
It’s perhaps not surprising there’s been a changeover as Miller and Lord are very busy people, and Warner wants to get going on the Lego Movie follow-up as soon as humanly possible, having already set a May 26th, 2017 release date. That may seem a long way away, but it’s actually not that long in animation terms.
Jared Stern (The Internship) and Michelle Morgan (Nancy Drew) are writing the script, and Miller and Lord will still be around as producers. Chris McKay previously directed animated TV shows such as Robot Chicken, Moral Orel and Titan Maxium.
Warner is also developing a Lego Ninjago movie, but it’s still not known when we might see that.
