Ross Noble is a bizarre human being, but in a good way. Most comics have a stand-up set that’s all fully worked out beforehand, and it’ll be pretty much the same every night of their tour, with perhaps a bit of spontaneous audience interaction. However with Ross you get the impression he has about five minutes of prepared comedy and the rest is made up on the spot. That’s been shown on many of his DVD releases, as they’ve included several gigs from the same tour, with virtually none of it being the same material.
Despite the seeming lack of preparation, he also well known for giving some of the lengthiest shows in the business, to the point it’s often difficult to get him off the stage. And perhaps most remarkably of all, it’s nearly all very funny.
There are occasional moments when things lag, but his natural wit and the way his brain can go off to bizarre and unexpected places means it’s great to be in his company, even on a DVD. With Mindblender whether he’s going on about Sweet, sweet piggy ti**ies’ or spending ages riffing on why someone’s turned up to the gig late, it’s great fun.
As long as you like his surreal and playful style, which is often surprisingly smart even if he often comes across as rather childlike, Noble offers great value for money whether it’s on stage or on DVD, and that’s certainly true of Mindblender.
Overall Verdict: There’s something infectious about Ross Noble and Mindblender is a great showcase for the way he can make you laugh and feel as if you’re part of something spontaneous and unique.
