While Ridley Scott already has his Moses movie Exodus to make, he’s already looking to what he wants to do after that, as Deadline reports he’s planning to make a movie about the devastating effects of concussion on American Football players, which has often been described as the dirty secret of the sport.
The plan is to ‘create a drama focusing on the debilitating effects that concussions are having on our sports heroes, and the role that league owners play in allowing it to happen. His plan is to create a morality tale on that issue, much the way that Michael Manns The Insider took on the tobacco industrys complicity in covering up the addictive and cancer-causing effects of cigarette smoking.’
Scott has apparently been moved by former NFL stars Junior Seau and Dave Duerson, both of whom committed suicide after suffering the debilitating effects of chronic traumatic encephalopathy. They both ensured they left their brain intact so they could be studied in the hope of helping others. Some players have found themselves suffering incredibly early dementia, with some suggesting memory loss among players has become more common in the last couple of decades.
