Last year The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel became a surprise hit, grossing $136 million around the world on a budget of just $10 million and showing that there’s a big audience out there for movies about older people.
Due to the film’s success a sequel is in the works, and now Deadline reports that Richard Gere is being sought to star in the movie, playing a new character.
Judi Dench, Bill Nighy, Penelope Wilton and Maggie Smith are all expected to return, although there aren’t any specific plot details as yet. The first film follows a group of aging Brits who head out to retire at the titular Best Exotic Marigold Hotel in India. However when they get there, they discover the luxurious life they were promised is actually a ramshackle old building, and India is different to what they expected.
The movie will shoot early next year.
