More than two years ago, Christopher McQuarrie was hired to write a live-action version of cult kids show Star Blazers. Now Deadline reveals that he’s stepped up to direct the film as well.
Originally called Space Battleship Yamato in its native Japan, Star Blazers was ported over to the States in the late 70s, redubbed and edited and became a bit of a hit. The series was set on a heavily polluted future Earth, with the human race facing extinction. Humanity is then offered plans on how to build super-fast spaceships, and told that if they can battle their way to the planet Iscandar, they’ll be given the secret to saving Earth.
Hollywood has been trying to adapt the show for a long time, but the likes of Disney have tried and failed. Hopefully this time it’s work out.
