Andres Muschietti’s Mama turned out to be far more successful than most had expected. It certainly made Hollywood more interested him, and now TheWrap reports that he’s close to a deal to direct the planned reboot of The Mummy franchise.
He replace Len Wiseman, who dropped out a couple of months ago due to scheduling issues.
No plot details have been released except that the project is being pitched as a modern-day action-adventure tentpole with horror elements and brand new characters. The previous Mummy movies were set in the 1920s.
Billy Ray (Captain Phillips) was brought on to handle the script in February, who’s writing a competing draft to Jon Spaihts’ (Prometheus) original script. Although the original plan was to pick one or the other, it’s now thought Universal wants to combine both screenplays into one shooting draft. It’s not been announced when it might shoot.
