Abigail Breslin plays Lisa, a young girl just shy of 16 who is living the exact same day over and over again. The thing is, Lisa and her family are dead and doomed to live out the last day before their death (by the hands of an evil spirit known as the Haunter) for infinity. However, when Lisa makes contact with another spirit and victim of the Haunter, she sets out on the path to solving a mystery that will finally set Lisa and her family free.
While there are some nice ideas and a few spooky sequences in Haunter, it still feels like a disappointment considering Vincenzo Natali is the man that brought us the brilliant and bold Cube and the unique Splice.
While Breslin is solid as the ghost on a mission, the whole thing feels a little bit twee. As the story develops and young girls connect to each in the afterlife through rings and necklaces, Haunter begins to feel a little bit teen lit, coming across more like an episode of Goosebumps’ than a tale of loss and otherworldly redemption in the vein of The Lovely Bones.
Overall Verdict: A reverse ghost story that lacks the imagination of Natali’s previous movies.
