It seems everyone has suddenly remembered Jean-Claude Van Damme’s old movies, as just yesterday it was revealed James McTeigue has signed up to direct a reboot of his 1988 breakout hit Bloodsport. Now Deadline reports that Radar Pictures is developing a remake of JCVD’s 1989 flick, Kickboxer.
Hong Kong filmmaker Stephen Fung (Tai Chi Hero) has signed up to direct, working from a screenplay by Jim McGrath and Dimitri Logothetis. The original Kickboxer was about Kurt Sloane (Van Damme), a master in the art of Muay Thai kickboxing, who takes on the brutal opponent who severely injured his brother.
Casting is currently underway, with the current plan being to shoot either this autumn or in early 2014. Kickboxer spawned four straight-to-video sequels, none of which starred Jean-Claude Van Damme, so you can understand why they might want to relaunch the franchise..
