Double Oscar-winner Christoph Waltz has signed up to star in the fact-based European thriller True Crimes. While there’s no director attached as yet, THR suggests the film may end up reuniting Waltz with Carnage helmer Roman Polanski.
The project is based on a 2008 New Yorker article by David Gann, which was about the mysterious case of Polish writer Krystian Bala, who became the prime suspect in a murder . The death had been a cold case for years, with some describing it as the perfect crime. Bala wasn’t even a suspect until he published a novel that described a murder strikingly similar to the one that had confounded local police for years, complete with details the authorities thought only the killer could know.
Waltz is set to play Polish police officer Jacek Wroblewski, who re-opens the case and is sucked into an underworld of sex rings and drugs. The tone of the story has been compared to The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo.
Brett Ratner, John Cheng and David Gerson are producing the thriller. There’s no news on when it might shoot.
