It’s not too long ago that CSI: Miami was the most watched programme in the world. However, while its sister shows CSI: New York and CSI: Vegas continue, the Florida-set series comes to an end with the 19 episodes of Season 10.
It’s pretty much business as usual, with Lt. Horatio Cane (David Caruso) once more investigating Miami murder, as well as being very indecisive over whether he needs to wear sunglasses or not. Crimes range from the murder of a male escort found in a hotel cabana to the Twilight inspired killing of the housemaid of a young adult novelist. As the makers of CSI: Miami knew the show was going to end, there’s also time to wrap up a few on-going threads, such as the return of Horatio’s nemeses, the Mala Noche gang, as well as ensuring a serial killer who gets away early in the season can come under the CSI’s lens again before the season ends.
Season 10 is pretty entertaining, as we’ve come to expect from the series, even if there are moments when it pushes things to the edge of credibility such as Horatio’s visions of his dead wife. I can’t help but wonder if the show came to an end because David Caruso became slightly disengaged from the show. In many episodes he does very little investigating, leaving it to Eric (Adam Rodriguez), Natalia (Eva La Rue), Calleigh (Emily Procter) and Ryan (Jonathan Togo) to run around doing the forensic science, and then he turns up at the end for the hero shot and to say something portentous.
It’s not a problem as, to be honest, for several years Horatio has become a bit of a parody of himself, so leaving it to the rest of the gang is actually a bit of a bonus. The team also feel the heat when the murder of someone who the CSIs have been trying to catch means they all become suspects.
This isn’t a season that will convert non-fans to become CSI: Miami disciples, but if you’ve previously likes the hyper-colour murder of the show, it’s a pretty good end to what’s been an entertaining 10 years. It’s been a few years CSI: Miami was truly at its best which was around seasons 3-6 but at least Season 10 isn’t trapped in the OTT action of seasons 7 & 8, when Horatio mainly just shot the bad guys and would have made Batman feel jealous in the vigilante stakes.
Overall Verdict: An entertaining end to one of the world’s most popular shows, which wraps everything up quite well while providing plenty of murder shenanigans. It’s not the greatest series of CSI: Miami, but if you’ve liked it over the years, this is a decent conclusion.
