Don Scardino’s feature directorial debut, the Steve Carrell starrer The Incredible Burt Wonderstone, doesn’t arrive in cinemas until March, but the 30 Rock producer is already planning his follow-up, with THR reporting that he’s signed up for a remake of Going In Syle.
The 1979 original starred George Burns, Art Carney and Lee Strasberg as a group of old guys who are sick of just sitting around waiting around to die. They decide to spice up their lives in rather extreme fashion by planning to rob a bank.
There seems to be a bit of a theme developing in Hollywood for movies about funny older people, probably due to the fact they’ve suddenly realised there are an awful lot of pensioners who’ve been lacking movie entertainment, and also that many of film’s biggest stars are now getting on a bit. We’ve had the likes of Red, and this year we get Stand Up Guys (with Al Pacino, Christopher Walken and Al Arkin) and Last Vegas (with Morgan Freeman, Robert De Niro, Kevin Kline and Michael Douglas).
If they do well, expect to see many more, including Going In Style.
