When Disney was putting together Tron: Legacy they had grand plans for the franchise, but things faltered when the film didn’t turn into a massive hit. While it grossed $400 million on a $170 million budget, it wasn’t as profitable a venture as the studio has hoped.
For the last couple of years, it seemed Disney has given up on a planned third Tron film, but now it appears it’s back on the cards, with THR reporting that Jesse Wigutow has been hired to write the script. He’ll take over from David DiGilio (Eight Below) who’d been working on it some time ago, before the whole thing seemed to drop off the radar.
It’s not clear is Wigutow is rewriting the earlier script or if he’s starting over, perhaps planning something less costly than Tron: Legacy. When that movie was made, director Joseph Kosinski already had firm plans in place for where things should go next, saying that the next part would have a major role for the son of Quorra (Olivia Wilde) and Dillinger (Cillian Murphy).
Jesse Wigutow has only one screenplay credit to his name and it’s a very different one to Tron. he wrote 2003?s It Runs in the Family. However he has worked on a lot of upcoming projects, including a remake of The Crow, a do-over of The Osterman Weekend, a Steve McQueen biopic, as well as Disney’s Peter And The Starcatchers and a movie called Parallel.
It isn’t known when Disney hopes to get Tron 3 in cinemas.
