For a few years there was a bit of a lull in adaptations of Stephen King novels, but recently he seems to have become flavour of the month again, from Scott Derrickson planning a film version of The Breathing Method to Jonathan Demme working on 11/22/63. Now THR reports that Peter Cornwell (The Haunting in Connecticut) is planning Mercy, and has Frances O’Connor signed up to star.
If you’re racking your brains to remember a King book called Mercy, there isn’t one. The film will be based on his short story Gramma, which was included in the author’s 1985 collection Skeleton Key, after originally appearing on Weirdbook magazine.
The film will see OConnor as a mother with two young sons who come to discover their ailing grandmother, Mercy, is a witch.
As with The Breathing Method, Paranromal Activity producer Jason Blum is shepherding the project to the screen, and also like that film, the plan is to keep the budget tight.
