Simon Curtis scored a big success with My Week With Marilyn, and it seems he’s planning to stay in the past as THR reports he’s planning to bring Edith Wharton’s The Buccaneers to the big screen, teaming with BBC Films, Ruby Films, and screenwriter Heidi Thomas.
The story is set in high society and follows five wealthy American girls who, unable to find mates in New York, set off for England in search of well-off gentleman bachelors. Interestingly, Wharton never finished the book, with this version working from an ending written by Wharton scholar Marion Mainwaring in 1993.
It won’t be the BBC’s first brush with the story, as they brought it to TV in the mid-90s, although for that version they made up their own ending for the tale.
It isn’t clear when The Buccaneers might shoot, although it may be a while, as Curtis is also attached to Click To Connect, from He’s Just Not That Into You screenwriter Liz Tuccillo.
