Cumberbatch & Kinnaman May Take On WikiLeaks Movie – In a biopic of Julian Assange

3rd October 2012 By Tim Isaac

There have been a couple of Wikileaks movie floating around Hollywood and it appears one of them may now be moving forward, as Deadline reports the film about Julian Assange being developed by Dreamworks, with Benedict Cumberbatch and Joel Kinnaman talked about to star.

Bill Condon is attached to direct the movie, with Cumberbatch being eyed to play the site’s founder Julian Assange, who has gathered many fans and a lot of enemies by releasing a slew of embarrassing classified documents. Kinnaman would play Julian’s former right hand man, Daniel Domscheit-Berg.

The film will be based on two biographies, WikiLeaks: Inside Julian Assange’s War On Secrecy, by David Leigh and Luke Harding, and Inside WikiLeaks: My Time With Julian Assange At The World’s Most Dangerous Website, written by Domscheit-Berg, with Josh Singer assigned to turn them into a script. It’s unclear whether the movie will be pro or anti Assange, or somewhere inbetween.

It’s believed the movie has taken longer that originally hoped to develop, due to the ever changing dynamic of Assange’s story. Julian is currently holed up in the Ecuadorian Embassy in London, to avoid extradition to Sweden on rape charges.

As yet, it doesn’t appear serious talks have been held with either Cumberbatch or Kinnaman, but they’re currently at the top of the list.
