Universal Pictures and Illumination Entertainment had a big hit with Despicable Me, grossing $540 worldwide from a $69 million production budget. Despicable Me 2 is already set for next year, and now they’re planning to go further, as a spin-off based about Gru’s Minions is in the works. The aim is to get it ready for a 2014 release date.
Pierre Coffin (Despicable Me) will direct alongside co-director Kyle Balda (Dr. Seuss’ the Lorax), with Brian Lynch (Hop, Puss in Boots) providing the screenplay. Pierre Coffin and his Despicable Me co-director Chris Renaud will provide the voices for the Minions as well. There’s little known about the story, except that the lovable yellow creatures will interact with humans. Certain currently unknown Despicable Me characters will also be back, along with a host of new roles.
The Minions have already proven popular, getting their own animated shorts and are also featured in the Universal Studios Orlando theme park ride, Despicable Me Minion Mayhem. (Source: Deadline)
