A few years ago Pixar was very ambivalent about making sequels to its most popular movies, but following a third Toy Story, a second Cars and the upcoming Monster’s Inc. prequel, they certainly seem to have changed their mind. Now John Carter director Andrew Stanton has signed on to direct Finding Nemo 2. It’s not surprising Pixar would like to make a sequel, as when Finding Nemo was released it became the highest grossing animated movie ever.
It is believed that part of Stanton’s deal is the promise that he will get to direct another live-action feature, despite the box office failure of John Carter. No story details have been released for this animated follow-up, although Stanton has always said he wouldn’t sign up for a sequel unless their found the perfect story, and he now apparently has a concept the studio loves. Newcomer Victoria Strause is writing the screenplay, with Lindsey Collins on board as a producer.
The original Finding Nemo is slated for a 3D re-release September 14, although it isn’t known if this sequel will be released in 3D. (Source: Deadline)
